Jerusalem’s Music Scene

Recently two Rock-and-Roll Hall of Famers announced the dates of their upcoming Israel performances: Aerosmith and Guns ‘N’ Roses. Our small but highly significant state is quite musically developed. Israel has also produced some wonderful music groups of its own. Following are just a few of the awesome shows you should check out in Jerusalem. Some of the performances listed are by world-famous musicians passing through, while others are by up-and-coming Israeli groups. Genres include: blues, Classical, Alternative Rock, Indie, and folk.

Some Blues for Your Soul

On Thursday of this week, the 15th of December, JC Smith will be playing at Mike’s Place, on 33 Jaffa Street. There will be no cover charge!

Smith is a blues and Soul guitarist and singer who played with many of the greatest Blues artists. His goal in life is to “keep the blues alive.” Smith has performed at Mike’s once before, and put on a great show. He recently rounded up his Europe tour and decided to bring some good Old School Soul to the Holy City before his return to the USA. Get more information here.

Keep it Classy

Catch some classical music in the City Center!

Every Monday (almost) the Jerusalem Theater opens its doors to the public. Great masters of chamber music perform, and it’s all free. Here‘s all the info you’ll need to ensure you have the best experience possible.

The Puppet Folk Revival

Meet Red Band, originally “The Puppet Folk Revival.” This act is truly one-of-a-kind. Be prepared for lots of laughs, and for funky covers of popular songs. Their upcoming performance is at Zappa club on Derech Hevron 28, on Thursday the 22nd of December. Get tickets early because it’s bound to be sold out fast. Here’s a video of them playing the beloved Pearl Jam classic:

The Fusion Experience

Buckets N Joints is an Israeli band that combines Indie/Alternative Rock with groovy Funk. Their performance is gauranteed to be energetic and unforgettable. They have performed over 200 shows in the past year, and won The Akademia Music Award for Best Rock EP. See them live on December 24th at Blue Hall Music, Yo’el Moshe Salomon St 12. The performance is free for Blue Hall diners!

Fly with the Angels

Deriving inspiration from early Blues, The Angelcy combines sounds of Reggae, Folk, and Gospel. They also integrate an authentic Mediterranean pitch, with a Balkan Gypsy twist to top it off. The band’s main influences are Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and Bob Dylan. Although they tour the world, the Angelcy sometimes perform in their native land of Israel. Grab this opportunity and see them live at the Yellow Submarine!

Mississippi, Morocco, Jerusalem

American-Israeli Blues artist Lazer Lloyd attended a music class with the blues master B.B. King. Lloyd later became a Ba’al Teshuvah, inspired by the musical telants of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach. He has described his combination of classical blues with Arabic flavor as “a combination of Mississippi and Moroccan tuning.” Lloyd is set to perform at Mike’s Place, on 33 Jaffa Street, on January 24th. Entrance fee will be 50 NIS.
